Understanding Your Concern
Horoscope matching exists to answer one practical question: are these two people likely to do well together over a long marriage. The guna score is the familiar shorthand for that answer, and on its own it is a fairly crude instrument. A proper matching reads the score and then goes past it, because the areas that decide a marriage day to day are not weighted evenly in the thirty-six points. It is worth knowing that the system was designed for a world in which the couple had never met and the families had little else to go on. Used as one input among several it remains useful. Used as the whole decision, it is being asked to carry weight it was never built for.

What Guna Milan Actually Measures
The thirty-six points are not one measurement. They are eight separate tests, each scoring a different aspect of compatibility and each carrying a different weight, which is why two couples on the same total can be in completely different positions.
Knowing which points were lost matters far more than knowing how many:
- Varna, concerning general compatibility of outlook, carrying a single point.
- Vashya, describing mutual influence and attraction between the two.
- Tara, read for health and general wellbeing within the marriage.
- Yoni, traditionally concerned with physical compatibility.
- Graha Maitri, which examines mental and temperamental affinity and carries real weight.
- Gana, describing temperament and disposition between the pair.
- Bhakoot, concerning prosperity and family welfare, worth close attention.
- Nadi, carrying the largest allocation and read for health and progeny.

What Each of the Eight Kootas Is Looking At
Varna, at one point, concerns broad temperamental grouping and is the least consequential of the eight. Vashya, at two, concerns the balance of influence between the two — who tends to defer. Tara, at three, concerns health and general fortune between the pair.
Yoni, at four, concerns physical and sexual compatibility, and it is one families skip past in embarrassment although it accounts for a good deal of ordinary marital friction. Graha Maitri, at five, concerns mental and intellectual compatibility — whether the two think in ways the other can follow — and is among the most useful of the eight in practice.
Gana, at six, groups temperament into three broad types and is frequently over-read. Bhakoot, at seven, concerns the relationship between the two Moon signs and is commonly reported as a serious obstacle. Nadi, at eight, carries the largest single weight of any test and is the one that most often causes a proposal to be refused outright.
That last pair account for fifteen of the thirty-six points between them, which is why a couple can be perfectly well matched on the other six tests and still come in under eighteen.

Reading it sensibly
How Families Should Interpret a Match
A matching report is a description, not a verdict, and the useful question to put to it is not 'did we pass' but 'what is this telling us to expect'.
What follows is how the report is best read:
- Ask which specific points were lost rather than accepting the total alone.
- Understand that a high score does not by itself predict an easy marriage.
- Treat a modest score as a description of where effort will be needed.
- Have any reported dosha examined properly, including its cancelling factors.
- Read the temperament and financial indications alongside the points.
- Check that both birth times are accurate before drawing any conclusion.
- Consider the practical compatibility of the two households as well as the charts.
- Ask whether any dosha reported has cancelling factors elsewhere in the same chart.
- Treat the reading as advice to the couple rather than as an instruction to the family.
Cancellation
Why a Low Score Is So Often Cancelled
The part of the tradition that gets left out of most matching reports is that the major doshas have documented cancellations, and they are not obscure exceptions — they apply commonly.
Bhakoot dosha is cancelled where the lords of the two Moon signs are the same planet, or where they are friendly to one another. Nadi dosha is cancelled where the two share a Moon sign but not a nakshatra, or a nakshatra but not a pada, among other conditions. Gana dosha is substantially reduced where the Moon signs stand in particular relationships.
A report that states a dosha without examining whether it is cancelled has done half the work, and that half-finished report is what most families are handed. Proposals are refused every week on doshas that the same tradition would have set aside.
This is the single most common reason a second opinion changes the answer, and it is worth asking for explicitly: not whether a dosha is present, but whether it stands.
