Understanding Your Concern
Jyotish works with nine grahas rather than the planets of modern astronomy, and each carries a defined set of significations. Knowing what they are makes any reading you receive considerably easier to follow, and easier to question.
The Seven Visible Grahas
The Sun carries authority, the father, vitality and position. The Moon carries the mind, the mother and emotional steadiness, and in Jyotish it matters more for personal questions than the Sun does.
Mars carries drive, courage, land and conflict. Mercury carries speech, commerce, analysis and education. Jupiter carries wisdom, teachers, children and expansion. Venus carries affection, comfort, art and partnership. Saturn carries labour, delay, endurance and old age.

Rahu, Ketu, and Why Nothing Is Simply Bad
Rahu and Ketu are the lunar nodes rather than bodies, and they carry amplification and dissolution respectively: Rahu pushing outward toward appetite and the foreign, Ketu inward toward detachment and release.
No graha is simply malefic. Saturn delays and also builds what lasts; Rahu disrupts and also drives ambition. Which effect predominates depends on the ascendant, the house and the period, which is why blanket statements about a planet mean very little.
