Understanding Your Concern
Few things in Indian astrology cause more distress than being told a chart is manglik, and few are more frequently overstated. The condition is real, the assessment is more involved than it is usually made to sound, and the cancellations are part of the classical material rather than a concession.
What the Condition Is
Mars placed in certain houses from the ascendant — classically the first, fourth, seventh, eighth and twelfth — is described as afflicting the marriage house. Some traditions reckon the same from the moon or from Venus, which is one reason two astrologers can disagree about the same chart.
Severity varies considerably. Mars in one of those houses in its own sign, or aspected by a benefic, is not the same thing as Mars afflicted in the eighth, and treating them as equivalent is where most of the fear comes from.

The Cancellations, and Proportion
The classical literature describes numerous cancellations: certain signs, certain aspects, and the well-known one where both parties carry the condition. A proper assessment checks these before anything is pronounced.
What should never happen is a match refused on the word alone, or an expensive remedy sold on it. A great many marriages proceed perfectly well under this indication, and that is worth saying in the same breath as the diagnosis.
