Remedies That Cost Nothing

Most of the money that changes hands in Indian astrology changes hands under the word remedy, and most people have never been told what the classical material means by it. It is worth ten minutes, because the definition alone rules out the majority of what is sold.

The categories

The traditional upaya fall into a handful of recognisable kinds. Mantra, undertaken as a personal discipline over a fixed count and a fixed period. Daana, which is giving, directed according to the planet concerned. Vrata, an observance or a fast kept over a defined stretch. Gemstones, prescribed against genuine planetary weakness. And conduct, which the texts weight far more heavily than the market does.

What unites them

With the partial exception of gemstones, every one of these is something the person does. None of them is a service bought from a practitioner and performed somewhere else on your behalf.

That single observation is the most practical protection available in this field. A remedy performed remotely, unverifiably, by someone you will not meet, at a price set against how distressed you sounded, is a transaction. Whether or not one believes in the underlying practice, that arrangement is not what the tradition describes.

Where the cost actually sits

Almost nothing genuine here is expensive. A mantra costs time. A fast costs a meal. Giving costs what you can afford and is explicitly meant to be proportionate to your means rather than to your anxiety. A local temple observance costs a fraction of what the same rite is sold for online.

Gemstones are the exception, and they are also the recommendation most entangled with the recommender's own trade. A practitioner who prescribes one to most clients is describing a business model. Where a stone is genuinely indicated, you should be given the specification and left to buy it from anyone you like.

The unglamorous part

The most useful advice during a difficult period is usually not a remedy at all. Do not make irreversible decisions inside a bad stretch. Protect sleep. Avoid large commitments until the period turns. Keep a small practice you will actually maintain for months rather than an elaborate one you will abandon in a fortnight.

None of that is saleable, which is roughly why it is so rarely what people are told. It is also the part that reliably helps.
